Glossary

15 Day Money Back Guarantee:  If for any reason you are not completely satisfied with any of our hosting services during the first 15 days following the issue of your FTP password, we will cancel your account and refund your money for the hosting service, less the set-up fee. Domain registrations are non-refundable.

Disk Space(MB): Disk space refers to the amount of space that we provide on our server to hold your web site files. One megabyte (MB) of disk space can hold several hundred pages of text and images.

Data Transfer (MB): The total amount of traffic generated by your site. If you deliver 100,000 pages a day of 10.0 kilobytes each, then your website will consume 1 gigabyte of data per day, or about 30 gigabytes per month. Over 90% of all websites never go above 5GB of data transfer per month. Most personal sites never go above 1GB of data transfer per month.

Email Addresses: Electronic mail. A service that sends messages on computers via local or global networks. You can set them up as POP boxes which store mail, email aliases which redirect mail to another box, or as autoresponders.

Mailing Lists: Mailing lists allow you to send email to a large number of contacts in a very efficient manner. You can manage the mailing list through the control panel. Participants subscribe to a list, receive copies of messages sent by other members, and can email their own comments. In some mailing lists there is a moderator who receives all mail, screens it, and decides which messages to pass on. Unmoderated lists simply redirect all mail received to the list of recipients. Mailing lists may be highly technical, or social and recreational.

FTP Accounts: The number of additional FTP accounts beyond the master username account available on each package. Additional FTP accounts permit site holders to restrict access for other users to specific areas of the site. Both standard FTP and SecureFTP are available.

Sub Domains: Subdomains allow segregation of content within a site. A photographer, for instance, may have photos.theirdomain.com under theirdomain.com. Regular subdomains permit viewing of content at sub.domain.com as well as domain.com/sub/. Subdomains used for the purposes of addon domains are visible by the addon domain name or via www.sub.domain.com (see the multi domain capable function).

MySQL: The number of mySQL databases available on each package. mySQL is a powerful open source database most often used in conjunction with the php programming language. Databases can be added or removed as needed right from the control panel for your account, without the need to submit a help desk request.

Email Autoresponders: Email autoresponders allow you to automatically reply to incoming messages with a pre-defined message.

Email Alias: Mail addressed to a non-existent mailbox on your domain will be delivered to the default mailbox. This allows you to use an unlimited number of email addresses and still have the mail reach your mailbox.

E-mail Forwarding: E-mail forwarders are accounts which simply forward e-mail to a pre-designated e-mail address.

WebMail: Access your POP3 e-mail account from any internet computer, just like Hotmail or Yahoo mail. Visit "http://www.yourdomain.org:2095", type in your username (in the format "you+yourdomain.org") and your secret password.

Spam Filtering: Server-level spam filtering is enabled to combat the ever-increasing rise of junk email that everyone with a mailbox will recognize. The primary list in use is that from Spamhaus. In addition, client-level spam filtering (via the client-configurable SpamAssassin) is also available to assist clients even further in keeping their inboxes clean.

Multi Domain Capable: True multi-domain capable hosting! This figure represents the number of addon (also known as pointed) domains available on each package. An addon or pointed domain is one that pulls content from a subfolder of an account rather than the top level web folder. This permits clients to set up domain2.com under domain1.com without visitors knowing domain2.com is not a standalone account. Addon domains have their own email functionality, and share the resources of the master account. Addon domains can be created or removed right from the control panel..

Control Panel: The Control Panel makes managing your web space fun and easy. This extraordinary interface offers you a way to quickly view account-related information and provides easy access to the wide variety of tools and utilities that come with your account. With the click of a mouse, you can administer your web space, e-mail accounts, directories, cgi-bin (program script storage area) and all the special features offered.. You can even add additional features to your account whenever you need them. Gain control and flexibility to make changes within your own time frame and according to your own particular business needs.

Fantastico: The following scripts can be quickly and easily installed right from your control panel using Fantastico.
  • Blogs (b2evolution, Nucleus, pMachine Free, WordPress)
  • Portals/CMS (Drupal, Geeklog, Mambo Open Source, PHP-Nuke, phpWCMS, phpWebSite, Post-Nuke, Siteframe, Xoops)
  • Customer Support (Crafty Syntax Live Help, Help Center Live, osTicket, PHP Support Tickets, Support Logic Helpdesk, Support Services Manager)
  • Discussion Boards (Invision Board, phpBB2, YaBBSE)
  • E-Commerce (CubeCart, OS Commerce)
  • FAQ (FAQMasterFlex)
  • Image Galleries (4images Gallery, Coppermine Photo Gallery, Gallery)
  • Mailing List (PHPlist)
  • Polls and Surveys (Advanced Poll, phpESP, PHPSurveyor)
  • Project Management (PHProjekt, dotProject)
  • Wiki (PhpWiki, TikiWiki)
  • Other Scripts (Moodle, Noah’s Classifieds, Open-Realty, phpAdsNew, PHPauction, phpCOIN, phpFormGenerator, phpLinks, WebCalendar).
Frontpage extensions: Frontpage is a Microsoft web page creation tool that requires special server extensions, known as Frontpage extensions, to function properly.

Apache Handler Manager: An apache "handler" is used to define what apache will do with a specific type of file when that file is called. Most file types (such as .htm(l) or .cgi files) have implicit handlers and do not require any setup on the part of the client. From time to time, however, clients may need to define a different action to be taken for a particular file type under their account. Handlers can be set up right from the control panel.

Cron Job Manager: Cron jobs permit the automated running of an account- or site-related function. Many times, cron jobs are set to execute a script for an account; other example uses would be an automated backup of a mySQL database, or a clearing of email marked as spam. If you have a job you'd like to run automatically at a specified time, cron jobs will permit you to do that. Notifications of completed cron jobs can be emailed or discarded, at your preference. Cron jobs can be set up (or removed) directly via the control panel, using a simple or advanced interface.

IP Deny Manager: The IP Deny Manager allows clients to easily block remote IPs from accessing their site. The interface is available right from the control panel and the listing can be adjusted at any time as needed by the demands of the site.

Detailed Site Statistics: Many statistics about the usage of your web site are available through the Site Statistics option in the Control Panel. The statistics are generated by the http-analyze program, by Rent-A-Guru.

.htaccess: The use of a .htaccess file under an account can provide anything from directives for customized error pages to denying access from remote locations to any part of a site to prohibiting hotlinking to images on an account and more. Clients can use .htaccess files at their discretion anywhere under their accounts..

File Manager: Similar to Microsoft Windows Explorer in function, the File Manager Option in the Control Panel allows you to perform file management tasks such as creating files and directories, setting the read, write or execute permissions on the files and directories in your site, renaming or deleting files or directories, and changing the password for directories that are password-protected.

Customizable Error Pages: This allows you to specify the page that will be seen by visitors if they request a page that does not exist or if they are not authorized to enter a particular area of your site.

Password Protected Directories: Using the Protect Directories option, you can limit the amount of access users have to your site. You can specify a username and password for the directory you are protecting. Each protected directory can have multiple users (each with different passwords if you prefer) who have access to it. Additionally, the Protect Directories option can be used to remove a user's access from a protected directory.

SSL Server (https://): In order to perform secure transactions on the web using https://yourdomain.com you need a hosting company that will support ssl. We use Apache-SSL on all of our servers. In order for SSL to function for your domain, you must acquire a secure certificate from Thawte or Verisign. You can generate the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and install the certificate with the Control Panel.

PHP 4.0:  PHP 4.0 is a server-side scripting solution already in use on over 70,000 World Wide Web sites. This version of the popular scripting language includes support for all major operating systems (Windows 95/NT, most versions of Unix, and Macintosh) and web servers (including Apache, Netscape servers, WebSite Pro, and Microsoft Internet Information Server).

Shell Access: Shell access is available on request for supported packages. SSH (for Secure SHell) permits command-line level functionality for account holders. While most people will never need SSH access, we do recognize that some people, especially developers, often find it useful. Regular telnet access is not available for security reasons..

CGI Bin:  A special directory where common gateway interface (CGI) scripts are kept. Since a CGI program is executable, having a CGI script on a web page means allowing everyone who visits the page to run a program on the system, which is not very safe. Putting the CGI script in its own directory is a security precaution; the cgi bin can be under direct control of the webmaster, which prohibits the average user from creating CGI scripts.

MIME Type Manager: Mime Types represent file types as presented to your web browser. The Mime Type option in the Control Panel allows you to specify which types of files you can open with your web browser.

MySQL:  MySQL is a true multi-user, multi-threaded SQL (Structured Query Language) database server. SQL is the most popular database language in the world. MySQL is a client/server implementation that consists of a server daemon mysqld and many different client programs and libraries. The main goals of MySQL are speed, robustness and ease of use.

Raw Log Files:  Even though detailed web site statistics are available to your in your control panel you also have access to raw log files so that you can use your own statistic analyis program.

SSI:  Server side includes (SSI)s applied to an HTML document, provide for interactive real-time features such as echoing current time, conditional execution based on logical comparisons, querying or updating a database, sending an email, etc., with no programming or CGI scripts. An SSI consists of a special sequence of characters (tokens) on an HTML page. As the page is sent from the HTTP server to the requesting client, the page is scanned by the server for these special tokens. When a token is found the server interprets the data in the token and performs an action based on the token data.

Site Search Engine: The Search Engine Options allows you to install the WebGlimpse Search Engine on your site. This tool allows users to perform searches for content on your site.

Form to e-mail:  Formmail allows you to use a form to receive e-mail from your users. The Formmail option in your control panel provides step-by-step instructions on how to set this up on your website, but it does not include an automated setup of a formmail form on your site.

Counters:  The Counter option allows you to set up a hit counter on your site, which lets you determine how many times the page on which the counter resides has been visited. This counter is displayed on the page and can be viewed in various counter styles. Additionally, you can start the counter at any number you set, and it will count hits and add them to that number.

Zend Optimizer: .The Zend Optimizer is required to run files encoded by the Zend Encoder. By default, Zend Optimizer is installed on every server for the convenience of our clients.

Perl: Perl is a versatile, extensible, cross-platform programming language which can be used for a wide variety of purposes.
